Pressure Washing the Interlock Around a Backyard Pool in Scarborough

The challenge
This Scarborough backyard is almost all interlock: a deck around the pool, a patio under the pergola and a walkway down the side of the house. Over time dirt, moss and weather had left all of it dull.
Pool decks have it worst. Water splashes out, parts stay damp and shaded, and moss and algae grow faster there than anywhere else in the yard, making the surface darker and more slippery.
Our approach
Interlock is held together by the sand in its joints, so pressure washing it is a balance: enough pressure to lift the dirt, not so much that it blasts the sand out and loosens the pavers. Goats Landscaping keeps the nozzle moving at a low angle and works section by section, so every part gets the same treatment.
Around the pool, the spray was aimed away from the water and the coping, so dirty runoff stayed out of the pool.
What we did
- Washed the patio under the pergola.
- Worked along the pool deck with the spray aimed away from the water.
- Cleaned the interlock beside the pool shed.
- Washed the side walkway in lanes down the side of the house.
- Kept the nozzle low and moving throughout to protect the joints.

Good to know
Once a year is enough for most interlock, usually in spring. Shaded areas and pool decks, where moss and algae grow faster, may need it more often.
After the wash
Clean interlock shows its real colour again, but the joints are the thing to watch. Where sand has washed out, fresh polymeric sand locks the pavers back together and slows weeds and ants.
